How ROTA Works: The Architecture

Simplified Architecture

ROTA (Regami Over-the-Air) technology is engineered to streamline the process of delivering remote updates to devices, enhancing their functionality and security.

The ROTA architecture is designed with three key components that work seamlessly together to manage remote updates. These components include the ROTA Portal, ROTA Server, and ROTA Client. This structure ensures that updates are delivered securely and efficiently, minimizing downtime and enhancing overall device performance.

ROTA Portal:

The ROTA Portal is an easy-to-use, cloud-based management interface that allows you to oversee and control the entire update process from a single location. With a user-friendly dashboard, it provides tools for managing releases, scheduling deployments, monitoring device status, and configuring deployment strategies, making it easy to manage large fleets of devices with precision. You can also manage through REST APIs.

ROTA Server:

The ROTA Server acts as the central hub for processing and deploying updates. It securely stores update packages, manages the distribution process, and coordinates with both the ROTA Portal and ROTA Clients. The server ensures that updates are delivered in a controlled manner, reducing risks and ensuring that all devices are up to date.

ROTA Client:

The ROTA Client, installed on each device, is a dedicated update agent responsible for securely checking, downloading, and applying updates. The deployment process uses HTTPS polling, ensuring no ports are left open on the device, further enhancing security and minimizing potential vulnerabilities. The client’s robust design ensures that updates are applied without interrupting critical operations, keeping devices running smoothly and securely.

Together, these components create a powerful, cohesive system that simplifies and secures the process of managing updates across a wide range of devices.

OTA Update Process for Operating Systems

Benefits of Regami Over-the-air

The ROTA client on each device periodically checks for updates, downloading and installing them securely via HTTPS polling and fail-safe modules.

HOW IT WORKS ILLUSTRATION 02.webp

The OTA update process for operating systems begins with the ROTA client securely downloading the latest update as a .rota files from the ROTA server. The update is then installed onto the device's passive root filesystem. Following installation, the device reboots. If the installation is successful, the passive partition becomes the active partition, enabling the updated system to run. However, if the installation fails, the device automatically rolls back to the previous operating system, ensuring continued stability and functionality.

Downtime during this process is minimal, typically lasting about a minute during the reboot, and it’s based on the device configuration. Additionally, any persistent data remains unaffected, as it is stored in a separate data partition that is not altered during the update.

OTA Update Process for Software Packages

Benefits of Regami Over-the-air

Software updates are also similar to Operating system updates. The ROTA client on each device periodically checks for updates, downloading and installing them securely on the device.

The OTA update process for software packages, such as applications, containers, package managers, and bootloaders, is streamlined through the ROTA portal. The process begins when a new software update, encapsulated in a .rota file, is uploaded and deployed via the ROTA Portal. This file is stored on the ROTA Server.

The ROTA Client on each device, integrated with the ROTA SDK, periodically checks the ROTA Server for available updates. Upon detecting a new .rota file, the client securely downloads it using HTTPS polling. The update is then installed automatically, ensuring that the software package is up-to-date without requiring any open ports on the device, thus maintaining a secure environment.
